| BACKGROUND Matt was born and raised in the small town of Dillon, Texas. He now lives alone with his grandmother, Lorraine, whom he nurses through her battle with old age dementia, after his mother left when he was young and his father was posted to Iraq for service. Matt is the Quarterback for the high school football state champions, Dillon Panthers. He previously only held the position of back-up QB to the highly talented and top high school Quarterback of the country, Jason Street. But after Jason was tragically paralysed from a tackle during the first game of Matt's junior year, Matt was foisted abruptly into the spotlight as starting Quarterback, a position he was neither ready for nor had the confidence to handle. At first Matt, being a quiet kid with nowhere near the popularity of his fellow teammates, struggled in the new position but with the support of Coach Taylor and mentoring by Jason Street, Matt soon gained the confidence as Dillon's Quarterback and led the team to win the State Championships. Matt is best friends with Landry Clarke, and shared brief romances with Coach's daughter, Julie, and also his grandmother's live-in nurse. However, he generally lacks confidence with members of the opposite sex and fears that everyone he gets close to leaves him. His mother left him when he was young, his father left for the war, Julie left him in favour of an older guy, and the nurse left him to return to her family in Guatemala. Gradually Matt has gained some confidence in himself, however, and has a yearning to study art at college when he finishes high school. PERSONALITY Matt is a quiet and shy guy who has been forced to find some confidence as Quarterback to the Dillon Panthers. Although he has suffered hardships in his life that most kids his age wouldn't ever have to face, he just bears the burdens and deals with it. He has a gentle, caring nature and this is shown in his ability to care for his mentally ill grandmother single-handedly when his father left to serve in Iraq. He lacks self-confidence in confronting situations, but was helped by Jason Street to find his voice on the field and become an effective and forceful Quarterback for the team. His shy and uncertain personality sees him being a typical awkward teenager with the opposite sex, and although he might appear to be ashamed of the life he shares with his Grandma, he just more worries people won't understand and want to deal with her when she's ill. |

Coach has brought him home and thrown him in a cold shower to try and sober him up, when Matt gets distressed and says everyone he gets close to him leaves him. He will arrive in the village dripping wet from the shower. |
